Studying with a child and our support

We accompany you in your role
as a student and parent.

das Studentenwerk Freiberg unterstützt alle Eltern im Studium

Quite a few students become parents during their studies and this raises a whole host of questions. Many students wonder whether family and studies can be reconciled at all - but with the right support and organisation, both are possible!

The Studentenwerk Freiberg is there to help you and offers counselling, financial support and flexible childcare options. Together we will find ways for you to master your everyday study life and at the same time spend valuable time with your child.

Childcare in Mittweida

Are you studying in Mittweida and looking for suitable childcare for your child? With our services such as the Auenzwerge daycare centre, the HochschulMinis daycare centre and flexible part-time childcare, we can help you combine your studies and family life in the best possible way.

Counselling on the topic of children during studies

Our social counselling centre is your first point of contact. Here you will first of all find a sympathetic ear for your changed life situation. You will also receive an overview of all questions that may arise during pregnancy and after the birth of your child:

  • What financial support can I get?
  • Am I entitled to social benefits?
  • Parental leave: yes or no?
  • What deadlines do I have to meet and where do I have to apply for what?

The social counselling service of the Studentenwerk Freiberg can also provide you with important information on:

  • Child benefit
  • Parental allowance
  • Maternity protection periods
  • Leave of absence
  • Other social assistance and support
  • Living with a child
  • Childcare

Counselling is available in German and English.

In all cases, counselling is free of charge, confidential and independent of third parties. Social counselling is subject to a duty of confidentiality.

Welcome money

The Studentenwerk Freiberg pays a voucher of 50 € for all newborn student children in Freiberg and Mittweida. So that we can transfer the welcome money to you, we need:

  • Birth certificate of your child
  • Certificate of enrolment from mum or dad
  • one or more original receipts for (at least) €50 showing that you have purchased items that directly benefit the child (e.g. nappies, clothing, toys, cot)
  • Your bank details

You can hand in the collected documents at the Studentenwerk Freiberg (Petersstraße 5, Department of Social Services) or at the Counselling Centre Mittweida (Am Schwanenteich 8, House 3).

Please make an appointment or send all documents by e-mail or post to Mrs Boeck.

The TU Bergakademie Freiberg is also giving out a welcome pack to its students. You can obtain the bulging bag from us.
